Middle School Volleyball

What a beginning to the middle school volleyball season! Thirty-five young ladies attended tryouts and head Coach Carolyn Lemm and assistant coach Bathe had enough girls to field 2 competitive and 1 developmental team.

The A and B teams are currently in the mix in district competition. "We started slow, but are gaining momentum with our athletic crew," says Coach Lemm. " Many are new to the game, but the girls have adopted an attitude of 'it’s not how you begin, but how you finish!”

The A and B team District Tournament will take place October 11 at The Woodlands Christian Academy. Plan to attend and cheer the middle school girls to a Cougar victory.

Congratulations to the following middle school girls who represented NCS for the 2014 year!

Volleyball Powerhouses!

Rosters are set for the school year and the volleyball season is underway and heating up! The varsity team, led by seniors Keely Abt, Annie Kraner, Katie Martin and Bethany Dennison, is a powerhouse squad poised for success. Just this summer, the Cougar Varsity Volleyball team became the rising underdog in Magnolia High School's summer volleyball league. Making their first appearance in this league and playing against 16 of some of the best 5A and 6A public school teams in Houston, our Lady Cougars finished up placing in the top 8 with a record of 18-8.

The junior varsity team is a young one, with half of the team comprised of incoming freshmen. Four players return from last year's team  and sophomores Kate Webster and Bayli Lewis are leading as team captains. The JV team shows great potential and ability, which is a tremendous foundation for the future of Northland volleyball.

Sure to be a first; the Northland volleyball teams are seeing double this year with THREE sets of twins: the Tosh, Herman and Lewis girls.

The complete schedule for both teams is listed in the  athletic calendar on the NCS website.  See you soon in the Cougar Gym and on the road!

Have you "Supported the Sports" yet?

On August 18, in conjunction with the NCS athletic department, the Northland Booster Club Board hosted "Meet the Cougars", a yearly event aimed to bring students and their families together to meet the athletic coaches, obtain important information about the sports season, celebrate Cougar athletes and sign up to become a member of the booster club.

New this year for the elementary students was an evening of face painting, balloon twisting and autographs by the NCS athletes, providing attendees, young and old, with a fun-filled, entertaining night.

Students also participated in a "name the Cougar" contest. With five names to choose from, students voted to name our cougar mascot, TC (The Cougars,). Please officially welcome and cheer for our new mascot, TC.

After a few rally cheers from our varsity cheerleaders, Athletic Director David Nelson spoke about Northland's motto of Victory Forever and shared a few facts and figures from the booster club pertaining to membership and team fees, and he stressed the importance of supporting the sports with a membership in the booster club.

The booster club works year round to support the athletic department and its programs. Memberships, combined with proceeds from various concessions throughout the year and fundraisers, comprise the booster club budget, which funds the coaches wish lists and various expenses related to our middle school and high school athletic programs.

Last year 87 percent of Northland students participated in middle and high school sports. One hundred and one families joined at various levels, representing 252 athletes. This
year, the goal is to fully fund the wish list amount ($64,364) with membership, leaving concession and fundraiser proceeds to take care of additional expenses and requests that may arise.  For example, the current booster club members have just recently approved a $2,500 allotment to the new drum line to help purchase drums and equipment.  The fine arts club has agreed to fund the remaining $2,500.

To date, our very supportive CougarNation has rallied to "support the sports" and booster club has raised $58,210 in memberships! We are well on our way to saying "Yes!" to as many requests as we possibly can. Help us to reach 100% participation with representation from all athletic families. We encourage you to join or renew your booster club membership by following this link:  NCS Booster Club Membership

#SPRINGGAME14 was #AWESOME!

#SPRINGGAME14 goes in the books as the best attended annual clash on the gridiron between Northland Football's middle school and high school offenses and defenses. In the end, the offense pulled out the win 14-8.  Head Coach David Nelson extends his gratitude to the Cougar Nation for the great turnout at the spring game.  "I absolutely loved seeing the stands full for the occasion.  I was pleased with the aggressiveness of our defense and the tenacity of our offense.  All in all, I believe that our football team grew up this spring and I could not be happier."

Middle and high school Cougars take the field.
Quarterback Brady Abt helped lead the offense to a win.
Luke Kubosh with the tackle for the defense.
Nick Petro dodges the middle school defense.
The crowd was entertained at halftime by the elementary cheer squad and the 2014-2015 middle school and high school cheer squads, led respectively by new sponsors, Tiffany Stewart and Kim Downey.

The junior and senior girls took to field at halftime to determine the winner of the yearly powderpuff game.  Though both sides claimed victory, photos takes by Dan Long of http://www.dlphotomemories.com clearly indicate 2 touchdowns by the senior girls!

The class of 2015
The Class of 2014
Thanks to generous Northland families and hungry fans, the booster club raised over $11,000 from an early bird membership drive and concession sales. These proceeds will help fund the 2014-2015 wish list submitted to the booster club executive board by the coaches. Combined with summer concessions sales from outside sports organizations, the board is hopeful they will raise enough money to fulfill the approximate $65,000 budget needed to buy the desired items for fall, winter and spring sports.

You too can "support the sports" by joining the booster club for the 2014-2015 school year. Membership levels are detailed at Northland Christian Booster Club Membership.   And if you join this summer, your name will be added to a drawing at Meet the Cougars for a fantastic prize similar to last year's iPad giveaway.

Most importantly, we want you to know your voice is important and your membership gives you the privilege of helping shape Cougar sports for years to come.
